Juan Sebastian Cabal and Eduardo Schwank stun Bryans to reach Men’s Doubles final – French Open 2011
Colombian Juan Sebastian Cabal and his teammate Argentinean Eduardo Schwank upset top seeded Bryan Brothers, Bob and Mike, in straight 7-6(4), 6-3 sets to advance into the final of the Men’s Doubles – Roland Garros 2011, where
style meets substance. They warded off early resistance without earning a single break in the opening set on Thursday.
The unseeded pair displayed exceptional skills to hold on to their entire serves in the opening set and raised their level of game in the final set to edge past the number one ranked pair in one hour and sixteen minutes at Stade
Roland Garros.
Cabal and Eduardo nervously entered Court Suzanne Lenglen to face the highest ranked pair but held their opening serve plausibly. Later, they kept their momentum and help their remaining serves from their box of tricks. However,
the Colombian Argentinean pair couldn’t convert one breakpoint opportunity in the fifth game and dragged the set to tie-breaker. They levelled the scores at 3-3, after which the winning pair won four out of five games to clinch the opener with a 7-6(4) victory
in forty-five minutes.
The Colombian Argentinean duo lost their way into the final set and was trailing 0-3 when they re-focused and unleashed their flurry of ground strokes to reel off next six games in a row. They sealed the deal in thirty-one minutes
after winning six games to three. The lower ranked converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to their advantage and produced a higher first serve share of 68 percent as compared to Bryans’ 54 percent. They also registered an acceptable 60 percent
win on it.
Bob and Mike played convincingly the opening set and won the first three games of the final set without losing a point. However, they lost the track later to lose the final six games and eventually exited from Paris without a title.
En-route to semis, Cabal and Schwank stunned eight seeds, South African Wesley Moodie and Belgian d**k Norman in straights in their opening round match. They then triumphed over British German pair of Colin Fleming and Philipp
Marx, and Swede Australian pair of Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley in the pre-quarter rounds. In the quarter-finals, the Colombian Argentinean tandem battled past Italians, Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace in three sets to reach this spot.
Up next for the winning combination of Cabal and Schwank is the former champions and the second seeds, Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Canadian Daniel Nestor, who downed fourth seeded pair of French Michael Llodra and Serb Nenad Zimonjic
in two set tie-breakers to reach this final spot.
