Judd Trump defeats Mark Selby to win first ranking title at Bank of Beijing China Open 2011
The Englishman Judd Trump won his first ever ranking title of his career since turning professional in 2005. The Brit edged past compatriot Mark Selby with the final score 10-8, in the final of Bank
of Beijing China Open 2011 after a nerve-racking clash on Sunday, the 3rd of April at the Beijing University Students Gymnasium. The 21-year-old has become the youngest player to win a ranking title after Chinese ace Ding Junhui who clinched the
Northern Ireland Trophy 2006 at the age of 19.
Trump potted the first ball of the scrappy first frame and within ten minutes he swept the table firing a century break of 104 to lead 1-0. Trump led 21-0 in the second frame before he missed a red
at the corner pocket and let Selby on the table. Selby could pocket only nine points and played a safe shot behind the yellow. Trump gave a four-point foul and after that a sensational break of 88 from Selby sealed the second frame win for him at 21-101 and
leveled the game with 1-1.
Selby failed to pocket the first point in the scrappy third frame as the red rattled at the jaws of the pocket. Trump came on the table and could only score 39 points as he missed a red at some distance
but in this miss the cue ball went into the middle pocket. The frame took a while after that as both players played safe shots. Finally, Selby left the cue ball behind the black, after which it took Trump four attempts to hit the penultimate red ball. Selby
needed a snooker because he was 23 behind Trump with 22 left on the table but he failed to make it and Trump took the frame 76-46.
Trump extended his match lead to 3-1 as he clinched the fourth frame hitting a stunning 104 again followed by Selby’s beautiful break of 90 to reduce the lead to 3-2. Selby took a 14-53 lead in the
sixth frame before he played safe behind the yellow and let Trump on the table who fired a half century break of 55 to grab the frame 69-53.
Selby gave in a decent 39 break after Trump pocketed two reds but on a potential red, he potted the cue ball too in the corner pocket. After that, Trump cued a brilliant 61-point break and clinched
the frame 67-39 to lead 5-2 in the match. Trump made 36 before he pocketed the cue ball and Selby took control of the table smashing a fine 62-point break to win the frame on a black. Trump was leading the final match 5-3 at the end of the first session after
the eighth frame.
The 21-year-old from Bristol kept his momentum alive after the interval as he grabbed the ninth frame 89-49 with an impressive 62-point break. Selby didn’t give up easily as he grabbed back-to-back
frame wins hitting two sensational breaks of 132 and 66 in the 10th and 11th frame respectively to reduce Trump’s lead to 6-5.
Before Selby’s comeback could make a turning point in the game, Trump struck again in the next frame with an excellent century break of 113 to edge past Selby at 7-5, but a century break of 134 from
the Jester from Leicester, Selby, took the score to 7-6 after 13 frames. Selby leveled the game 8-8 after grabbing back-to-back frames with a fine 124 in the 15th frame.
Trump had a tough fight-back from Selby, but he held his nerves and didn’t lose his winning momentum. He sealed his first ranking title victory with the final score 10-8 as he grabbed two consecutive
frames with pretty decent half century breaks of 57 and 51. With his first ranking title win, the Ace, Judd Trump, has moved up 11 places at number 14 in the top-16 for the first time.
