Judd Trump upsets Ronnie O’Sullivan to book semi-final berth at 2012 Masters
Snooker fans gathered at the Alexandra Palace witnessed a major blow in the 2012 Masters Snooker tournament when the reigning UK Champion, Judd Trump outplayed none other than the Rocket, Ronnie O’Sullivan in the second quarter-final of the championship.
The match seemed a ‘clash of titans’ before it began in front of a superb crowd but at the end. it was an easy win for the Bristolian potter.
The 22-year-old Trump dominated the game from the very first scrappy frame and did not let his veteran opponent come at the table. The Ace stunned O’Sullivan with his impressive potting genius during the contest. O’Sullivan was not able to score impressive
points in the first session of the match and slipped four frames down before he could win a frame.
The young Trump cruised into the first frame victory by 63-34 with a couple of impressive small breaks to hit the lead 1-0. Second scrappy frame was a whitewash win for the youngster. He smashed a cracking knock of 66 points to clinch the frame by the score
line of 100-0 to extend his lead to 2-0.
The Wordsley potter, O’Sullivan, bounced back into the game during third frame but his progress was put down again by Mr. Haircut 100 when he pocketed a 78-point break to take Frame 3 by 78-49 and move within a three frame lead at 3-0. The World Number five
was even more brutal at the baize in the fourth frame as he hit a throttling clearance of 140 in an attempt to achieve the maximum 147 break to click the fourth frame in one visit by 140-0.
A 67-point break from O’Sullivan brought him in a strong position in Frame 5 and he won it easily 1-83 to move within one frame at 4-1. Trump maintained his four-frame lead at 5-1 after winning the sixth frame 58-30. After that, the Essex Exocet, O’Sullivan
proved his class by potting a massive 141 break to claim the seventh frame in one visit at 0-141.
The eighth frame proved to be the last one as Trump finished ahead of O’Sullivan by 65-54 following a clean break of 65 points in reply to the Rocket’s 54. Trump has now successfully made his way into the semi-final stage and will play against the winner
of Neil Robertson/Mark Williams quarter-final clash.
