Judo - Sensitivity training?

How do you improve your sensitivity in Judo? By sensitivity, I am referring to when an opponent grips/clinches, you instinctually react by changing your weight distribution to maintain stability and slip into a counter throw - keyword being instinct.

Usually, when I "feel" that my position/grip is vulernable, I quickly transition my position into something more dominant, however, I tend to get caught in reaps and sweeps.

  1. Practice with your eyes closed or blindfolded with a trusted friend this will allow you to rely on your sensing his movements and it will speed up your reaction times

  2. I would suggest you slow things down between you and your opponent so that you can better get a feel for this.  Along with that an old training drill is to practice some drills and basic type throws, chokes, and holds with your eyes closed which forces you to better learn the technique as well as develop your sense of touch, movement, and balance.  All my students practice their basic self-defense skills with their eyes closed when they get to Blue-belt for this reason as well as for better learning how to defend themselves in a place where they can not see like a dark parking lot or alley. Obviously they are not executing any strikes, punches or kicks during this but try it and I think you will find it helpful.

  3. Sensitivity and proper timing are something that can only be learned with practice. Whether it is proper weight distribution in judo or 'sticking hands' in Chinese boxing, practice makes perfect.
