Question:

Judo - double leg takedown?

In my last class, our instructor taught how to do a double-leg takedown, along with something similar to the firemans carry..but, my question is, why does it feel so awkward? he was having us drop our FRONT knee to the ground first, then our back a split second afterwards...I can't do this for some reason without falling almost..it feels so much more natural to keep the front leg at 90*, and put the back knee down..

why does this feel awkard? is this how it should be taught? would this work in MMA? cause i'm orthodox..and judo is totally flipped, feels weird.

  1. t*t feels awkward bc u just started but the right way to do the move is to have ur front leg( the one going between his leg drop down to the knee) bc that will propel ur body to keep moving forward so that you have more force to move ur opponent, if ur back knee drops ur stuck, and then will have a harder time finishing the move

the double leg in judo is probably different then the one taught in high school/possibly  freestyle wrestling, which is also different then the bjj double leg, bc of head placement to avoid chocke , and other considerations each matrail art varys on how to do the move. yes it could work in mma

  2. How else would you drop levels without dropping your front knee first? I'm not being condescending, just never took HS wrestling so I know of no other way.

  3. Actually there are a couple of different ways of shooting a double leg take down and one way is for a person to shot in and slide on the front of both their shins and knees so they end up almost sitting back on their heels.  This allows you to get your arms and hands around your opponents legs better as well as tie them up at the knees and keeps him from sprawling out of it very easily.  Another method is to shot in like for a single with only one knee (the front one up at nintey degrees) and reach across.  This does allow your opponet to sprawl out of it more easily since you can't usually wrap the legs up at the knees and you can't lift him and turn him slightly but instead can only drive him straight back.
