  1. jujitsu.

    or

    shinobido.

    i would always choose Judo.

  2. I would take Judo because I believe that the grappling in Judo will assist you better in a self defense situation.

  3. Hapkido is a combination of taekwondo and aikido, the two least effective martial arts ever created.  Go with judo.

    Let the thumbs downing commence!

  4. Judo more realistic in a fight

  5. I've dabbled in hapkido, and I've practiced judo.

I have more experience in judo, so my opinion might be a little jaded.

I think both arts have a lot to offer their students. Here is my OPINION.

I think a beginner would be proficient in judo, faster than hapkido. Judo does a lot of randori, even at the white belt level. I believe a student to puts the time in will be proficient in a few basic throws and have some exposure to matwork.

When I took my three months of Hapkido, I didn't do any sparring whatsoever. I'm not saying it will be like that at every Hapkido school. In Hapkido, I worked on a mixture of joint locks, kicks, punchs and throws. But, I never felt confident that I had a basic mastery over what I was taught. I didn't feel as though I could actually used what I learned in that SHORT amount of time in a fight.

Now with that said, I did see some of my Hapkido instructor's top students, and they were unbelievably awesome.

In contrast, after six months of training in judo, I felt at home on the mat. I learned a few submissions like juji gatame, and basic throws like ippon seoinage and uchimata, that I was able to pull off. I learned the five escapes from gesa gatame (scarf hold), and felt as though I could pin someone and apply chokes and submissions. But, I felt as though I had to fight, I could use what I was taught.

The biggest factor in choosing between judo and hapkido is going to be this.... Who is the better instructor? How proficient are his or her students? Which art appeals more to you?

  6. Judo.

In addition to the the positives mentioned above, Judo is going to be Judo from one club to another.   Plus, you are going to get winded and drained during Judo.  Judo feels more like a real fight than Hapkido, even though Hapkido is meant to be more for self-defense.

  7. Are you looking for sport of self defense?

In my opinion, Judos a great sport

Hapkido's awesome for Self Defense but may take a while to get use to the throws and locks...

  8. Judo is a blast - Especially if you're athletic and competitive or aspiring to be!

However, you have to like the school and instructor.  I'd ask to workout a few times with both classes and see which school works best for what you're looking for.

  9. I would strongly suggest Hapkido. Very practical and very very effective. Also easy to execute joint breaking moves with minimal effort. Best of luck with your training!

  10. Judo is primarily a sport. But has effective self defense when taught properly. Hapkido is purely for self defense and has judo type throws in the art already and is more well rounded than Judo. I've been doing Hapkido for over 10 years and have dabbled in Judo.So I would say Hapkido for sure.

  11. Hapkido
