Jujitsu/Judo question?

In the past 2 days I went to my first lesson in jujitsu and judo. I have three questions.

1. How did you do your first day.

2. Dose any body else find it nearly impossible to learn a move by just watching and listening. Once the guy is done talking I can't remember one thing from where to put the hands to anything but if I do it I know it. If your and instructor you would not look down on someone for this right. I don't think mine dose but should he?

3. How long dose it take to learn these moves and there names.

  1. i pick it up quick due to the fact i watch mma and grappling tournaments. maybe you were having a off day see how it goes next time you go

  2. Hey, man.  You need not worry. I can't speak for everyone, but I know for myself, that even two years on in training Jiu Jitsu, I still have troubles remembering the names of positions, sweeps, finishes, etc.  You should take a notebook to class with you and make notes after class.  You could make a grid and have some of the "bread and butter" Jiu Jitsu positions listed and then underneath, write down what you can do from each position in a way that makes sense to you.  It will get easier.  I promise.  And remember, this is only your second day.  You can't expect to know it all, can you? Have fun!  This is a great sport!

  3. My first day was pretty awkward. It was a lot of work in the guard  and I felt uncomfortable having another dude between my legs.

In the beginning for me, I had no idea what I was doing. My instructor gave me a lot of personal attention and showed me step by step what to do until I could pull the move off. Once I did it a few times, I just kept thinking and thinking about it.

After a while, you won't need to follow your instructor's directions step by step. You'll start to get a better feel for how the body works and be able to see WHY certain moves to what they do. Once that happens, you'll be picking up moves real quick because you'll understand them.

But if you're still not catching on after a few weeks or so, I'd suggest finding another gym to train at since the instructor might not be doing a great job at teaching.

  4. got thrown on my head and chocked out about 20 times

thats a problem alot of guys have some just need to do the move to learn it, i had the same problem in high school wrestling , and no ur instructor will probably not luck down on you

it takes months  to know how to do them and years before you master any of them, as for names i have no idea bc i simply go with the English  translation, ex armbar, hip toss ,( yeah i know i have been told to learn them in japanies  but after having to learn 5 other languages i am reluctant or just plain lazy )

  5. 1. I was motivated & eager to learn as much judo/jujitsu training on the first day. Matterinfact, i learned quickly on half the moves my judo teacher shown me. It was a thrill & something in life u can never forget.

2.Yes, its impossible to learn by watching thats why, you have to practice the move when ur judo teacher tells u to demostrate.

3.Everyone learns slow or qucikly but it should not take more than two months or 2weeks to learn all the first basic moves of judo.

Other than that, the experience & effort of judo ka is the best thing to learn in your lifetime span. So make the best of it & never give up learning judo.

A judo student for 4years now.

    Belt - I don't go by color.

I go by learning first, no matter how long it takes to get the next color belt in judo.

  6. I have never done judo, but if you want help learning jujitsu submissions, start watching mma matches and listen closely to the commentary.  I was a fan for 10 years before my first BBJ class, and the knowledge I had picked up as a fan really helped quite a bit.  I already knew the names and basic positioning of many submissions, so it was easy to follow the teacher's instructions and learn the details.  There are also tons of instructional videos on youtube for BJJ.
