Question:

Jujitsu boxing and mma ?

I am currently going to jujitsu. However i was going to take up mma and boxing aswell. Is this a good blend ? or will things overlap, or will it be too much. I want a good blend for fighting. I was hoping that the boxing would be my stand up, the jujitsu my ground, and the mma everything in between. However do you learn kicks in mma etc ? would i be better taking kick boxing instead of boxing.

The only classes i have available to me are jujitsu, boxing, mma and kickboxing. Thanks

Also what type of training should i be gearing towards. I currently do sprinting, weight etc to build power. Would i be better working on strength, or speed, endurance etc ?

Thanks again

  1. By jujitsu do you mean Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Japanese jujutsu?  If it's JJJ, don't bother.

The MMA class will probably contain all of those arts you listed, just without the depth.

It depends on your preference for one art or another, but personally I would take BJJ (if that is available) and boxing.  Isolating the punching technique in boxing will lead to better punching skills.  It's another issue of depth there.

I would probably stray away from kickboxing unless it was Muay Thai or San Shou; American kickboxing is not as effective.

You need to train strength, speed and endurance.  If you had to pick one to emphasize over the other one, it should be endurance.  Horsepower means nothing if the gas tank is empty.  Do some running interspersed with sprints.  You also want to spar/roll as much as you can -- that seems to build endurance more quickly than anything.

  2. Believe it or not there may be CERTAIN cases where boxing and jui jitsu would be sufficient...with that said...the more you learn the better off you are...but to use an example...one of my favorite fighters, Mac Danzig, specializes in Boxing and BJJ, hes looking pretty sharp right now, and even though im sure somewhere along the way he practices kick boxing, the principles of boxing and BJJ in the right hands can be ver dangerous...being a proficient boxer makes you capable at ending a fight at ANY moment, just the same, being good at BJJ enables takedowns and takedown defense, with submissions and ground game obviously...conclusively, if your taught what to look for and you can counter and survive low leg kicks...and kicks in general...then yes, JJ and Boxing MAY be sufficient..but learning more is always beneficial.....also to clarify...when you say MMA in between...MMA is mixed martial arts, so if your studying jiu jitsu and something else, boxing or kickboxing, you already are MIXING martial arts.....

  3. As said above by Chris P the more you learn the better. There are MMA fighters that started in boxing but because it doesn't teach you any kicks the foot work is very different. On the positive side it tends to be a full contact martial art so you learn how to take a punch as well as deliver one.

I would take kickboxing instead but if the boxing schools close to you are good ones they'd be worth your time.

Yes, learning MMA will overlap with a lot of martial arts. But it's the combination of arts that makes MMA so attractive. I'd continue on your current path. JuJitsu followed by either boxing of kickboxing and then MMA training. This will give you a good solid base before getting into MMA which can be very tough and physically demanding.
