Julia Cohen breezes past Tina Schiechtl into final eight – ATT Women’s Circuit 2011
Top seeded American Julia Cohen tumbled over Austrian Tina Schiechtl in straight sets at the ATT Women’s Circuit 2011, an ITF event taking place on the clay courts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She easily formulated a 6-2, 6-4 victory
over the 27-year-old Austrian to book a last eight spot on Wednesday.
22-year-old Cohen outmuscled the Austrian, ranked 331st in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings, in straight sets on their first meeting. She is not only eyeing for her second year-to-date title but has also confidently
advanced into the quarter-finals.
World number 181, Cohen thundered into the opening set and got the desiderated break in the very first game. She maintained consistency in her game and reeled off next three games in a row before the Austrian could hold on. The
American then kept her serves comfortably and clinched the set by winning six games to two. She fended off all breakpoints faced and cashed in two breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
The American youngster carried her winning ways in the final set and held her opening serve in the second game to level the scores by 1-1. She held her entire serves through blistering forehands from her arsenal of skills and broke
Schiechtl’s serve once in the end to seal the set with a 6-4 win.
Summing up Cohen’s performance in the match, she played exceptionally well and manifested a better first serve share as compared to the Austrian. She also brushed off entire breakpoints faced and converted three out of many breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage.
The American made final showdown at Bangkok and Rosario ITF events and triumph title at Yerevan ITF. In addition to this, she reached the semi-final at Tbilisi ITF and made last eight berths at Rancho Santa Fe, Irapuato, Bogota,
Vancouver, Sarajevo, Telavi and Asuncion ITF events before entering this tournament.
Next up for the highest ranked player of the tournament is the seventh seed, Spain’s Ines Ferrer Suarez who eased past Venezuelan Adriana Perez in straight sets to set-up this meeting.
Third seed Chanel Simmonds of South African faced a different fate. She suffered a straight set defeat against Norwegian qualifier Ulrikke Eikeri.
Simmonds displayed dismal performance and was eventually ousted in an hour from her rival, ranked almost 300 spots above her in the WTA rankings. She broke Eikeri’s serve once but lost her serve three times. As a result, the seed
suffered a 3-6, 3-6 loss on their first encounter.
