Julia Cohen rallies past Ines Ferrer-Suarez into last four – ATT Women’s Circuit 2011
Top seeded American Julia Cohen required a third set to overwhelm resilience by the seventh seed, Span’s Ines Ferrer-Suarez at the ATT Women’s Circuit 2011, an ITF event taking place on the clay courts in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
She clobbered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over the 21-year-old Spaniard to book a final four spot on Thursday.
Ranked 181st in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Cohen formulated success in a three setter mouth watering match against the Spaniard, ranked 102 levels below her, on their third meeting. She not only maintained
winning record against Suarez but also inched towards her second year-to-date title. They last squared off in the semi-final round of the Rosario ITF event where the American crushed Suarez with a breadstick.
22-year-old American cruised into the Argentinean clay courts and pocketed opening three games in a row before the lower seed could hold on. Later, she held remaining serves convincingly and broke the Spaniard’s serve again in
the end to clinch the opener with a 6-2 win. Cohen reflected all breakpoints came across and capitalised on two breakpoint chances to her advantage.
The lower ranked player, Suarez found the winning track in the second set. She smoothly bagged entire serves without facing any hindrance and converted one out of many breakpoint opportunities to her advantage, subsequently sealing
the equaliser by winning six games to three.
The American rising star got back in action in the final set. She lost an early serve but bounced back by breaking Suarez’s serve twice, eventually capping the set with a 6-4 victory.
Overall, Cohen displayed extra-ordinary skills and manipulated a better first serve share. Despite losing her concentration in the second set, she dominated in the first and final set and spilled fewer errors and double faults.
The American is enjoying a successful season so far despite falling into a five match losing streak thrice. She made final eight showings at Rancho Santa Fe, Irapuato, Bogota, Vancouver, Sarajevo, Telavi and Asuncion ITF events.
In addition to this, Cohen lifted a title at Yerevan and made final appearances at Bangkok and Rosario ITF events.
Next up for the highest ranked player of the tournament is the Croat Tereza Mrdeza who trashed Brazilian Roxane Vaisemberg in straight sets to reach this spot.
The unseeded Croat lost her serve once but broke Vaisemberg’s serve three times to seal the deal with a 6-3, 6-4 score line on their first encounter.
