Julia Glushko blasts through Gabriela Dabrowski in the second round – Challenger of Granby 2011 CH
Third seed Israeli competitor, Julia Glushko, forced her way through the quarter-finals of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby, after crushing the local hope, Gabriela Dabrowski, on Wednesday afternoon.
Being played on the hard courts of Granby, Canada, Glushko proved absolutely devastating in the contest, blowing away the Canadian competitor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in one hour and four minutes of play to qualify for the quarter-finals
of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournament.
The contest remained totally one-sided all the way, with the Israeli dominating the matchup in every minute of play. Glushko appeared far too good for her opponent to contain and cruised through the competition to register a comprehensive
victory in the end. Her victory earned her a spot in the final eight of the tournament and pushes her one step closer to the title shot at Granby.
The Israeli was exhibited her belligerent form in the game to overcome her bleak opponent, who appeared in all sorts of confusions right from the beginning. Glushko made her powerful serve her primary weapon of destruction, firing
85 per cent of it on target and winning 14 out of 17 first serve points in the opening set. She stung her first serve break of the day in the very first game of the contest and then kept pressing Dabrowski to commit unforced errors throughout the game.
Glushko crafted seven opportunities to break the opponent’s serve and cashed in two of them to get a commanding position in the opening set. Dabrowski’s errant strokes kept landing long and wide of the court on regularity, letting
away easy points to the third seed, who eventually went on to close the opening set at 6-3 to get one up in the contest.
Israeli dominance kept prevailing with its full effect in the following set, with Glushko launching a series of attacking moves upon her crumbling opponent. She secured 16 first serve points in the set number two and converted
three out of four break opportunities en route to victory. Dabrowski finally registered her first serve break of the day but it came a bit too late for her, as Glushko had already sealed the contest in her name at 6-2 to advance into the quarter-finals.
The third seed will play against the winner of the all-Canadian clash against the fifth seed Sharon Fichman and the wildcard entrant, Brittany Wowchuk, in the quarter-final.
