Julia Glushko blows away Carol Zhao in the opening round – Challenger of Granby 2011 CH
Seeded at number three in the tournament, Julia Glushko of Israel, annihilated the Canadian wildcard, Carol Zaho, in the opening round of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby on Monday.
The Israeli faced no real difficulty to cruise through the contest to wrap up a straight sets victory in less than an hour’s time, settling the final scores at 6-0, 6-2, to make it into the second round of the Challenger Tour event.
Local hopes were crushed by the Israeli aggression, as Zhao hung in the contest for barely 57 minutes before submitting the matchup. The Canadian appeared a total mismatch for Glushko, who raced through the games with utmost ease
to dispense out Zhao in the very first round of the tournament.
21-year-old Glushko had a ballistic start to the opener and came out firing at her opponent from the very first minute. Her aggressive moves were far too good for the sloppy Canadian, whose bleak baseline defence gave plenty of
opportunities to Glushko to fire powerful winners down the line. The third seed took hold of the contest by breaking in the very first game to lead 2-0 with her 64 per cent precise serve.
The Israeli secured 10 out of 14 first serve points and kept breaking the Canadian serve in all the games to race to 6-0. Zhao failed to hold serve in any of her serve game and let three successive break points to her opponent
to drop the first set in opening 20 minutes of play.
Zhao finally held serve for the first time in the competition in the second set but had to suffer a break point two games later. The Canadian tried to break the shackled for the first time in the game and registered her first serve
break of the day to bring the scores back to even terms.
Glushko kept playing her aggressive tennis all the way and bagged 27 out of total 42 points being played in the second set. Two more consecutive serve breaks propelled her to victory at 6-2 in the most assertive manner and booked
her a place in the second round of the National Bank’s Challenger of Granby.
A total of 84 points were played in the entire matchup, with Glushko winning 55 and Zhao lagging far behind with just 29. The third seed will have to wait for her second round opponent, which will be the winner of the match between
Gabreila Dabrowski of Canada and Alexandra Mueller of the United States.
