Julia Goerges, Jarmila Gajdosova progress to the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Julia Goerges of Germany defeated Frenchwoman Mathilde Johansson 7-6(10), 6-2 in their second round match at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships in London, England on Thursday.
It was Johansson’s second time appearance in the second round since she lost to Vera Zvonareva in 2009. Sure enough, Johansson did cut back on the shots and upped her game a little on returns but those tweaks were pointless when
she could not concentrate on her game and lost the match in an hour and 48 minutes.
For all that the Frenchwoman took the early lead in the opening set, breaking for a 5-3 lead, she performed a weak service game quickly to throw away her advantage. Once the opening set had escaped her, the decider got progressively
worse.
Despite getting an early break in the opener, the Frenchwoman let Goerges to level the score at 1-1, when she sailed a forehand wide and was unable to clinch another breakpoint before the tie-breaker appeared to decide the winner.
It was the more aggressive Goerges who dominated that trade, racing towards a 12-10 lead when Johansson suffered lapses in concentration, losing the opener in just 71 minutes.
Goerges, the Stuttgart champion, was gifted four break points at the beginning of the opener and blazed a backhand winner to get what could have been the decisive advantage, but nerves took hold and Johansson levelled the terms
at 2-2.
It did not indicate a shift in fortunes, however, with Goerges continuing to do all the pressing and Johansson welting under the pressure once again at 3-2. Goerges was not going to get her opponent off the hook second time and
she confidently closed out the match, screaming in happiness in her own moment of victory.
With this win, the German No.1 has improved her year-to-date win/loss mark to 26/12 matches and now marches on into the third round where she will meet Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia for the first time in her career.
Also, Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia managed to race up the third round after defeating Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.
The Australian player even did not need to show her trademark gritty qualities, keeping the ball in play and waiting for the Czech No.4 to put it in the net or out of court. The Czech player, found no answer to her problems and
Gajdosova looked certain to wrap up the match in just 78 minutes.
