Julia Goerges arrives in Toronto for the Rogers Cup – Tennis News
German Julia Goerges arrived at Toronto on Friday, 5th August for the Rogers Cup, Premier 5 tournament on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour held on the hard courts at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada.
The Bad Oldesloe native, Goerges is all geared up for her match at the Rogers Cup 2011, which will be a good warm-up for the US Open. It is the 122nd edition of the Canadian Open and is one of the biggest tennis tournament
held from August 8th to August 14th.
Goerges tweeted, “got to Toronto....long trip but nice beeing here...off to bed now...a good night to all..”
Ranked 20th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Goerges had a good start of the season as she reached the semi-finals at Auckland and made a third round showing at Australian Open. Her form dipped afterwards but
she re-created her magic in early April and made a last eight berth at Charleston. The German played her best tennis after this and went on a ten match unbeaten run which included a Fed Cup win, a title at Stuttgart after stunning world number one Caroline
Wozniacki and made last four showing at Madrid. She also reached her career high rank in early June at world number 16.
However, the German is currently standing on a four match losing streak which started from her third round loss at Wimbledon.
After her last match against world number 125th, Sloane Stephens at Carlsbad, the German admitted her defeat and said,
"I was just playing my game and going for it the whole match and obviously it's not working well right now," Goerges said. "I have to give all the credit to Sloane. She didn't give me any free points. But the way I was hitting
the ball still felt good to me. I lost the match, but it was the right way for me to play."
22-year-old German will face a former world number one, Serb Jelena Jankovic in her opening round match at Toronto.
Fifteenth seed in this tournament, Jankovic last played at Wimbledon where she crashed out from the opening round. The Serb is currently out of sorts but Goerges needs to improve her shots and breakpoint conversion rate if she
is to snap out from her losing streak.
