Julia Goerges battles past Andrea Hlavackova in the opening round – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2013
German beauty, Julia Goerges, showed some vintage performance on her favourite clay surface in Rome, Italy, and won her opening round battle against the Czech veteran, Andrea Hlavackova, on Tuesday. The world number 25 had to recover
from one-set deficit to turn the tables upon her opponent at 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
It was the third encounter of these two professionals and the German diva sustained her clean sheet with a hard-fought victory. Goerges had to battle for two hours and 16 minutes before she could come out as the deserving victor.
She had a terrible start to the match and lost the opening set in s dismal fashion but recovered very well to reel off the next two sets with poise.
"I started pretty well, I have to say, but then somehow I fell asleep and had no energy anymore," Goerges said of her win. "She started to play better and better and came up with some great shots, but I said to myself, 'You brought
yourself into this miserable position, just try to get yourself out it - the match is not over until we shake hands.' I started playing pretty solid again and saw her talking more to herself and getting tight a bit, so I told myself, 'You better take your
chance now, otherwise you won't get any more chances.' And I took my chances, even though I was a break down again in the third set. I really believed in it. It's great coming back from these kinds of scores and really almost being out."
Hlavackova managed to secure 34 out of 60 first serve points in the match and broke the German serve six out of 10 times. On the other hand, Goerges clinched merely 24 out of 46 points on her first serve and converted six out of
nine break points to finish on the winning side. She kept on winning the crucial points in the last two sets of the match and took the game away from the Czech veteran in the end. Goerges will face the former world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the second
round of the tournament.
