Julia Goerges beats injury-stricken Kirsten Flipkens in round one – Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2013
German beauty queen, Julia Goerges, had an easy victory in the opening round match of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Wednesday. The world number 30 won the opening set of the match when the Belgian veteran, Kirsten Flipkens, withdrew
from the match, letting Goerges into the pre-quarter-final round of the WTA event in Stuttgart, Germany. The curtailed version of the match lasted for 49 minutes before Flipkens pulled out due to illness, with the final score of the match 6-2, 2-1, in favour
of the home favourite.
Goerges was seen in her vintage form after a long time and displayed some really classy strokes to win the opening set comfortably. She broke the Belgian veteran in the very first game of the match and then carried on playing aggressively
all the way. Flipkens could hold just one serve game before she suffered another cracking blow from the German opponent in the fifth game, falling to 1-5 in the opener. She couldn’t do much to stop Goerges from serving out of the set at 2-5.
Flipkens was sloppy at the beginning of the second set but managed to hold her opening serve. She was broken in the third game when the Belgian pulled out of the match due to sheer fatigue. Goerges was pleased to get to the second
round but desired to achieve the same results after a complete match.
"I saw in the beginning that she wasn't really feeling well or moving as well as she usually does," Goerges said. "Before the match I thought it was going to be a very tough match but unfortunately she wasn't able to play at her
level. She's a great player and you never want to win a match this way. It was a completely new situation for me last year, coming into such a big tournament as defending champion. This year I'm much more experienced and I'm coming here more relaxed, not really
nervous at all, and with no pressure. I just want to enjoy playing this tournament. It's a great court and the crowd is fantastic, so I'm really looking forward to the rest of the week."
Goerges will face the fifth seed Czech Petra Kvitova in the next round.
