Julia Goerges bounces from a set down to oust Romina Oprandi in round three – Australian Open 2012
German beauty queen, Julia Goerges, confirmed her place in the last 16 players of the Australian Open with a win over the inferior ranked Italian, Romina Oprandi, in the third round. She trailed one set down at the start of the
match but bounced back to dominate the proceedings and seal a win with the final scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
It was a good show put forth by the Italian, who had already defeated the tenth seed, Francesca Schiavone, in the second round of the tournament. Both these players had faced each other in the US Open Grand Slam tournament in 2010;
Goerges won that battle in straight sets but this time the task was made more difficult by her competitor.
Slow start to the match saw a gradual build up to the score line, with just mishap from the German in the third game that cost her breakthrough. Oprandi capitalized on that initial lead with full command and continued her prolific
form to take down the German. Goerges was lucky to be facing a minnow at this stage of the tournament but sometimes overconfidence backfires and same happened to the German in the first set. Her laid back approach cost her set with two successful breaks for
her opponent.
The Italian commenced the second round proceedings; much more cautious display from the German was rewarded with a breakthrough in the seventh game when she capitalized on the two unforced errors from her opponent; coupled them
with two successive winners across the court; much needed breakthrough for the German diva was appreciated from the crowd. Suddenly the crowd started cheering for the German as she broke serve once again in the ninth game to round off the second set proceedings
in her favour.
Third set was about to start and the fans feared an injury for the German tennis ace; her body strength usually doesn’t allow her to play lengthy encounters and she is famous for her retirements during the third set for fatigue
issues. This time she was ready to fight the pain and rocked the show with some eye-startling display of all round shots in the final set. Spared just one game for her opponent and broke twice in succession to confirm her place in the fourth round of the tournament.
