Julia Goerges bullies Sofia Arvidsson in the quarter-final – Generali Ladies Linz 2012
World number 19, Julia Goerges, smashed a barrage of winners to send packing the 47th ranked Swede, Sofia Arvidsson, in the quarter-final of the Generali Ladies Linz on Friday. The German absolutely rocked the show;
smashing the ball at her will, especially in the opening set. The final scores were 6-1, 6-4 that were registered in an hour and 17 minutes.
The 23-year-old German bossed the contest completely. She committed number of errors throughout the encounter but that were covered by the bombardment of winners. It was her second head-to-head triumph against the 28-year-old Swede
who had no answers at all to the onslaught of her rival.
The opening set witnessed three serve holds at the start. However, two of them were convincing that were bagged by Goerges whilst the other one was won after a hard fought battle. In the following stages of the set, the German
fifth seed tortured the Swede who wasn’t able to take control of any rally. Goerges won two breakpoints in a row and didn’t falter on her serve despite a little fight back in the last game from Arvidsson.
Arvidsson failed to hold serve in the first game of the second set as well. Both players tested each other but no breakpoints were won until the seventh game. An exchange of breakthroughs kept the lead of the 19th ranked
Goerges intact. She held her serve with four straight points in the final game to book a spot in the last four.
Goerges commented afterwards, “The score looks easy but the second set was definitely high quality - she stepped her level up a lot in the second set and gave me a tough time. My game is to be aggressive, serve well and go for
my shots, and I can't really complain about the way I'm playing - I'm moving well, waiting for my chances and going for it. Everything's working well for me so far this week."
She added, “You can speak German and have your stuff around. I'm enjoying my time here. It's always nice to be in Austria and I hope I stay a little longer!"
Kirsten Flipkens will be the next opponent for Julia Goerges.
