Julia Goerges crushes Casey Dellacqua to progress into last eight – Dubai Championships 2012
German tennis icon, Julia Goerges, crushed the Aussie, Casey Dellacqua to book a berth in the quarter-final stage of the Dubai Duty Free Championships on Wednesday. She plonked the Aussie in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 in a time of just three-quarters of an hour.
The opening set was a bagel that shows the complete domination from the German. It seemed like she was out there for some long lasting revenge, crushing the Aussie with her sublime run of play. Everything she struck was meeting the sweet spot of her racquet
and never missed a baseline winner down the line.
Dellacqua was often seen watching the ball sail past her from the other corner of the court. She was caught wrong-footed on most of the occurrences and never seemed to have the same confidence that was seen in the earlier stages of the tournament.
Goerges smashed four aces and exerted immense pressure on her opponent that forced the Aussie to commit a couple of double-faults in the opening set. The match was completely dominated by the German who broke serve in succession and was not tested even once
on her serves.
With such a comprehensive start to the match, Georges looked to stack few more breaks. Her all-round onslaught earned the first breakthrough in the sixth game of the second set with scores progressing 4-2 in her favour.
There was no coming back for the Aussie who was already going through a miserable period on the court. She was missing her first serves and the slower pace on the second serves allowed the German to manoeuvre the ball at will.
Another breakthrough in the following serve game of Dellacqua confirmed the quarter-final spot for the German. She deserves the spot especially considering her first round emphatic turnaround when she defeated the Russian tennis ace, Svetlana Kuznetsova,
in a gruelling three-setter.
Originally, Goerges was scheduled to play the reigning World Number one, Victoria Azarenka, but unfortunately the Belarusian unwillingly had to quit the tournament due to a left ankle injury that was inflicted at the practice session on Tuesday. It was the
second biggest blow to the tournament officials who had already seen the second seed Czech contestant, Petra Kvitova, due to illness.
Next up for the German diva is the beauty queen of Slovakia, Daniela Hantuchova. It will be a much more interesting battle considering both the players are on top of their form and hungry for titles.
