Julia Goerges decimates Anabel Medina Garrigues to reach the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Julia Goerges of Germany romped to her 25th match win of the season on Wednesday as she defeated Spaniard, Anabel Medina Garrigues in the second round at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships.
The sixteenth-seeded posted an easy 6-0, 6-3 defeat to the Spaniard, who barely offered any resistance in one hour and eleven minutes of play. Once the German player had estimated the right angles and depth of shot best suited
to keep her lower-ranked opponent moving, Goerges sapped the Spaniard by her brilliance.
During the first set of their second round match, which was concluded in just 39 minutes of play, Goerges was just terrific. In addition to her intrinsic backhands, she was also serving and returning extremely well. The 22-year-old
German did enough to give the thoroughly-bamboozled Garrigues an inferiority complex.
With the humiliation of defeat in the opener, Garrigues was sweating, scampering and probably thinking about slamming a racket hard against her shoe. The Spaniard looked resigned to her fate and she tamely surrendered her serve
for a third successive game as Goerges surged into a 6-3 lead.
Undoubtedly, the 28-year-old Garrigues had her chances, chipping sweetly and testing Goerges with that curious forehand of her but the world No. 43 could not stick to her efficient tennis at the critical moment, losing the match
in one hour and eleven minutes.
Emerging victorious, the German No.2 has tied their head-to-head series to 2-2, and now marches on into the third round of the Wimbledon Championships for the first time in her career.
Her eyes now are on Mathilde Johansson of France, whom she had met before at the first round of 2011 French Open. With her title run at Stuttgart, the German No.2 confirmed her status as one of the toughest contenders on tour,
and not to mention, her game certainly suits the surface, and she looks to have the self-confidence to go all the way.
The French is just 14/12 for the year, so an upset is probably not on the cards. But Goerges is sure to observe some kind of admirable difference in Johansson from the last time these two met at the first round of 2011 French
Open.
