Julia Goerges devastates Anastasiya Yakimova to clear the first round – Qatar Total Open 2012
German tennis diva, Julia Goerges, faced no real difficulty in disposing of the 67th ranked Belarusian opponent, Anastasiya Yakimova, in the opening round of the Qatar Total Open on Tuesday afternoon. The one-sided affair
lasted for just 72 minutes, with the 16th seed Goerges winning comprehensively in twin-sets, 6-2, 6-2, to make through to the round of 16 at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level event.
The 23-year-old German beauty queen, Goerges, was absolutely unplayable in the matchup against the Bulgarian underdog and dominated every second of the contest to drive her out of the tournament in an authoritative manner. The
16th seed is still eying to bag her third WTA championship title and her impactful start at the Qatar Total Open clearly depicts her intentions.
The versatile German diva had a couple of dismal runs in her recent tournaments but looked extremely efficient against Yakimova in Tuesday’s matchup. Goerges took hold of the momentum early in the opener and never allowed her bleak
opponent to have any sort of impact on the game. Her mighty forehand worked perfectly for her, as she belted a number of winners down the line and across the court to take the better of her opponent.
It was the second singles encounter between the two competitors; the first one being held on in the third round of the Roland Garros in 2008. Goerges was ranked at number 119 and Yakimova was rated at the 168th spot
at that time when she outsmarted the German in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to get 1-0 in the head-to-head tally against Goerges. The 16th seed avenged her defeat from the Belarusian on Tuesday, stinging a much more assertive victory over her to inch
a step closer to another championship title opportunity.
Yakimova was led down by her error-prone game play; the Belarusian coughed eight double faults and secured just 16 out of 35 points on her first serve in the matchup. She registered merely one break point in the entire contest
and suffered five out of nine cracking ones from her German opponent to finish the match on the losing side in the end.
Goerges was off to a flyer in the opening set and nailed two break points straight away to rocket away to 4-0 in no time. Yakimova broke the German’s serve in the fifth game and it was the only highlight in her entire game play
throughout the match. She dropped both sets in a disappointing manner to let Goerges through to the round of 16.
