Julia Goerges dispatches Aravane Rezai to cruise in round two – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
German tennis ace, Julia Goerges, thrashed the French qualifier, Aravane Rezai, in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 during the opening round match of the Barcelona Ladies Open. She started her clay court season at a high-note registering
her first win in a world class fashion taking 69 minutes.
She was pressurized at the start with Rezai breaking serve in the opening game but the second seed starlet fought back immediately with a breakthrough in the following game. Both players held their serves for the following four
games and kept the scores together at 4-4.
The French player was lethal with her backhand and forehand returns but couldn’t get control of the double-faults that led to her downfall. In the last two serve games of the set first set, she committed six double faults that
gifted the win to her opponent.
Gorges didn’t had to work hard to steal a win in the opening set and bullied her way throughout the second half, making her rival’s life miserable. She registered a bagel courtesy to pathetic serve control of her opponent coupled
with some breathtaking returns that entertained the crowd thoroughly.
The second seed German won 65 out off 111 points and registered a respectable first and second serve conversion rate to progress into the second round of the contest. She converted five of the allotted six breakpoints in her favour
and saved a couple of them to sink her opponent.
In a post-match interview, the tennis beauty queen from Germany stated, “Aravane's tough - she was Top 20 before. You have to be ready for every ball when you play her and that's what I did. Not everything worked perfectly for
me but you always work on fixing those things for your next match. And there were a few good things today. I'm happy I'm through."
She was seen wearing bright coloured shoes so talking about them, she added, “It was something from Nike town in Berlin; they let me design my own. I like them a lot. Probably not everyone likes them, but I really do!"
Earlier in the day, the top seed Italian contestant, Francesca Schiavone, was dumped by the Olga Govortsova of Belarus that registered the first upset of the tournament. With the top seed out of the contest, Goerges becomes the
hot favourite contestant to win her maiden title this year having squandered an opportunity in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Championship.
She faces Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain in the next round
