Julia Goerges dumps Aleksandra Wozniak in the first round draw – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012
German beauty queen, Julia Goerges, had to go through some tough channels in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia before she disposed of the 53rd ranked Canadian qualifier, Aleksandra Wozniak, on Monday.
The gruelling three-setter was finally settled in the favour of the world number 29 at 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-3, propelling her to the second round of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier 5 event in Rome, Italy.
The contest started off in grand fashion for the German diva, who just blasted her way through the opening set to get the upper hand early. She was absolutely unplayable with her fiery forehand returns and the occasional drop shots
in the contest. Goerges spared just one game for the Canadian opponent in the opening set, breaking her serve three out of six times to rocket away to 6-1 in no time.
Tide turned in the very nest set with Wozniak posing a solid resistance to halt the momentum of the belligerent German. A series of break points was witnessed in the set and both contenders nailed four break points apiece to drag
the scores to 6-6, enforcing a tie-breaker round into play. Goerges stumbled in the decider and could barely pocket one point in the entire tie-breaker round to submit the second set at 6-7(1).
The Canadian qualifier lost her steam in the final set and Goerges came up with four cracking break points to come on top. The German concluded her hard-fought victory at 6-3, entering the second round draw of the coveted clay-court
tournament in style.
Unseeded in the tournament draw, Goerges registered her 17th victory of the running season and the third consecutive one over the 24-year-old Canadian. She last defeated her in a WTA clay-court event in Estoril two years
back and now attains a 3-0 lead over Wozniak in the all-time head-to-head series.
Goerges will square off against the seventh seed French tennis veteran, Marion Bartoli, in the second round of the Rome Masters later this week. Bartoli is among the top-eight seeded players who have received a bye to have a direct
access to the second round of the tournament.
