Julia Goerges eases past Pavlyuchenkova; breezes into semis of the Mutua Madrid Open
German Julia Goerges eased past Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets to advance into the semi-finals of the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open, a clay court tournament held at Park Manzanares, Spain on Friday. She registered a
6-4, 6-2 win over the 19-year-old Russian.
Ranked 27th in the WTA Premier rankings, Goerges gunned down the Russian teenager, ranked six places above her, in eighty-four minutes on their first meeting. She has now taken the lead in her head-to-head series by
1-0 against Pavlyuchenkova.
The German is in awesome form this season and won the title at Stuttgart before entering this WTA Premier Mandatory event. She triumphed over fourteenth seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi, Russian wild card Dinara Safina and top seeded
Dane Caroline Wozniacki in the pre-quarter rounds.
22-year-old displayed tremendous skills in the opening set and held her opening serve spectacularly. She then kept remaining serves through her awesome agility and broke the Russian’s serve in the fifth game to eventually seal
the set by winning six games to four in forty-nine minutes.
Goerges hammered 19 winners and smacked four ferocious aces in the set. She saved all five breakpoint faced and converted one out of three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
The German kept her winning ways into the final set and broke Pavlyuchenkova’s serve in the very first game. She then kept her entire serves plausibly and broke the teenager’s serve again in the fifth game to clinch with an assuring
6-2 score line.
Goerges hammered two more aces and saved the only breakpoint conceded. Despite clobbering more double faults and lower first serve share, she registered an amazing 85 percent win on. The German also converted two out of three breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage to win easily.
She will next face the winner of the match between fourth seeded Victoria Azarenka and Czech Lucie Safarova.
Azarenka trashed Spanish wild card Arantxa Parra Santonja with a bagel and triumphed over first two opponents with double bagels and double breadsticks. Safarova on the other hand downed Australian Jarmila Gajdosova in straight
sets to reach this spot.
