Julia Goerges ends Heather Watson cameo in the second round – French Open 2012
World number 27, Julia Goerges, ended the cameo of the Briton qualifier, Heather Watson, in the second round of the Roland Garros French Open on Thursday. She squashed the 20-year-old Briton in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and moved
into the third round of the contest.
There is no history between the two players so psychological games were not part of the match. Both contenders played with their natural flow and the better one came out as a winner. Watson had her chances in the match but she
was just not good enough to beat the likes of the 23-year-old German.
The clash started with a swap of breakpoints before the experienced German posted a serve hold to slow down the tempo. However, the following three games witnessed successive breakpoints at both ends that kept the lead of Goerges
intact. Finally, a thumping serve hold to nil consolidated her position further.
Watson also didn’t surrender and hammered the German with three back-to-back winners to register a serve hold to nil. However, she wasn’t able to break serve in the final game of the set and lost the opening battle. It was a close
contest but the experience of the German did forced the Briton booming starlet to work hard for her points.
Watson started off miserably in the second set. She lost the opening serve game and went down to a trail of 2-0. However, she recovered immediately to hold serve and cover it up with a stunning breakthrough that levelled the scores
at 2-2.
Serve holds at both ends further pushed the scores to 3-3 before the German broke serve in emphatic fashion; smashing two startling winners. She held her serve to 40:15 and that increased the gap between the scores to 5-3.
Both players were tested slightly in their final serve games but that didn’t stop the German from holding on the youngster. Watson was happy with her performance overall and wanted to move ahead in the tournament but couldn’t ride
her luck further.
Next up for the German beauty starlet is the Dutch contender, Arantxa Rus. The 25th seed German has been in dismal form in recent times but she has proved in the French Open that she can fight back in difficult conditions.
She is a natural hard hitter but changed her game style a bit to survive on the clay courts. She needs a bit of luck to reach advanced stages of the tournament.
