Julia Goerges halts Kirsten Flipkens to reach final – Generali Ladies Linz 2012
Seeded fifth in this event, Julia Goerges from Germany, stomped over the Belgian qualifier, Kirsten Flipkens, in a three-set mouth-watering match at the Generali Ladies Linz 2012 on Saturday. She hit back to clobber a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory against the world
number 66 to progress into the final showdown at this indoor hard court event held in Linz, Austria.
The German star made a drastic entry at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament taking place from 6th to 14th October. However, she sought her rhythm afterwards and eventually moved a step closer towards
her maiden year-to-date title.
Battling each other for the third time, Goerges not only avenged her loss in Biberach three years ago but also took lead in the head-to-head series by 2-1 against the 26-year-old.
Goerges stated in an on-court interview after dominating in this one hour and 39-minute venture:
"I can only be proud of my performance today. Not the first set - she wasn't making any mistakes and I was rushing too much - but in the second set I got back into the match and wasn't giving her any free points. I made it tough for her and it finally worked
out."
Flipkens stormed into the Intersport Arena. She drew the first blood in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. After Goerges held her serve in the third game, the Belgian reeled off last four games and pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
The 23-year-old rebounded in the following set. She cashed two break chances and eventually sealed the equaliser by winning six games to two.
Ranked 19th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Goerges maintained her intensity in the final set. She got the coveted break in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. The German then kept her remaining serves with poise and availed another break opportunity
in the last game, eventually clicking the decider with a 6-3 success.
The gorgeous German is hoping to carry her rhythm into the title-round.
"First of all, I want to enjoy the final - it has been a long season and it's nice to see my game is still there and improving. Also it's nice to be in another final here - I won my first WTA title in Austria - so hopefully I do well.”
She will square off against the top seed, Victoria Azarenka, who crushed the Romanian lucky loser, Irina-Camelia Begu, with a breadstick to set up this battle. The world number one was broken once but availed six out of nine break chances to formulate a
6-2, 6-1 victory in one hour and 11 minutes.
