Julia Goerges obliterates Shahar Peer in the opening round – Open GDF Suez 2012
German diva, Julia Goerges, took down the 37th ranked Israeli tennis star, Shahar Peer, in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 on Tuesday. The contest was played on hard courts in Paris France during the Open GDF Suez tournament.
It was not a straight forward tie for the sixth seed German but she made it look like a one-sided contest; dominating her opponent with complete authority and wasted no opportunity to pound on her throughout the match. Previously,
both these players contested against one another in the Family Circle Cup last year and Goerges was the one who pulled up an upset by defeating Peer in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. This time she was the seeded player of the two and that clearly shows the level
of improvement in the game play of the German over the period of one year.
Vigilant start to the match witnessed both players capitalizing on their serves for the first three games. No pressure was exerted on either of the player serve games before the German improvised a bit and won couple of cheeky
points at the net to register the first breakthrough of the match. She comprehensively doubled her lead in the following game and won tenth point in a row to register another break point in the sixth game.
She was absolutely devastating with her forehand winners down the line, whilst her counterpart was just watching the ball sailing past her on most of the occasions. Goerges served for the set in the following game and lost no point
to register an emphatic first set triumph.
The German was enjoying an excellent run of form on the court; her strokes meeting the sweetest part of the racquet and placing the returns perfectly to make it impossible for her opponent to cover considerable ground for each
shot. She broke serve in the opening game of the second set and doubled the lead with a successful serve game immediately.
Peer was trying hard to fight back into the contest but her shots were missing the sidelines with just few millimetres on most of the occasions. She dropped another game on her serve and trailed 0-3 in the second set. Soon, the
German built upon that lead and bagged the fourth game as well. Peer saved another breakpoint to register her first successful game after losing nine games on the trot.
With four successive breaks in the following games, shared in the ratio of two apiece, Goerges confirmed the place in the next round match against the Czech participant, Petra Cetkovska.
