Julia Goerges outplays French Alize Cornet in the 1st round – Texas Tennis Open 2011
German Julia Goerges outplayed French Alize Cornet in one hour, 36 minutes and twenty seconds by bouncing back from a bagel set down to fasten her place in the second round of the Texas Tennis Open 2011 with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 win
at the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas.
The two initially met at the Bad Gastein Ladies event held in Austria in 2010. The world number 20 (Goerges) won their first meeting with a bread stick and 6-4 victory. The Higher Power had granted the French yet another chance
when they met earlier this year at the ASB Classic in Auckland. However, to her fans disappointment Alize was unable to equalize the head-to-head and again lost in straight sets. Meeting for the third time and the second time this year one would have expected
Cornet to catch on to her opponent’s play but alas!
22 year-old Goerges commenced the opening set and with near perfect accuracy struck one double fault while her opponent had 2 net balls and one foot in the set.
Although Goerges had targeted 47% of her first serve shots, she was unable to play her opponents serve in the first and second serve. It wasn’t the big striker’s day and she only accomplished 29% of her total service points. Mean
while, her opponent thanked the Higher Power and like a barrage of well positioned shots was able to grab a 71% win in her total return points.
Cornet saved all the three break points on her serve and broke her opponent thrice, adding yet another advantage to her game and with a strong serve that won her 63% of her total service points, she was able to name the set on
her name.
Following the 21 year-old victory in the first set, the crowd expected her to keep on performing the way she did, however, that was unlikely as Goerges made a comeback to restore her dignity.
After analyzing her opponent in the first set Goerges asserted more power into her serves and with a display of strong ground strokes, she bagged 63% of her total service points, which were almost more than double the points
as compared to her first set and she also threw an ace. On the contrary her adversary was restricted to only a 37% win of her returns in the set.
Although, the big hitting German had perfected her serve her return was still mediocre and was capable of bagging a 46% win of her total return points. On the other hand, the French was not able to win many games on her serve
and was restricted to only 53% of her total service points won.
Goerges secured the second set by breaking her opponent’s serve consecutively in the last two games and accomplishing 55% of her total service points won.
As Halep bagged this set with a total set score of 53%, both the players tied on their set scores, the third set was the determining factor.
The third set saw an effortless victory for Goerges, as she perfected her serve and struck zero double faults and also improved on her return game to bag a commendable 64% of her total return points.
The world number 20 troubled the French and managed to qualify into the second round of the Texas Tennis Open where she will face Czech Barbora Zahlavova or Brit Elena Baltacha.
