Julia Goerges outshines compatriot Kristina Barrois in 1st round – US Open 2011
A ray of sunshine initiated the fourth Grand Slam event of the year; US Open 2011. Duelling on hard court 11 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was the nineteenth seeded Julia Goerges against compatriot Kristina Barrois. The younger German (Goerges) put her elder compatriot (Barrois) to shame by achieving a speedy 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 64 minutes of play.
The two players met for the first time on clay courts of Cagnes-Sur-Mer during the ITF tournament in France where Goerges had outfoxed her opponent in a straight set victory. The Higher Power had given a chance to Barrois in 2010, during the E-Boks Sony Ericsson Open held in Copenhagen, Denmark, to avenge her loss but alas, she never availed the opportunity and let Goerges take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head.
Commencing the first set was Julia Goerges who had achieved her second WTA title at Stuttgart and with plenty of experience opened the set by smashing four aces consecutively and bagged the first game without any opposition. However, in the next game Barrois quickly achieved all her points and now the score read at 1-1.in the following five games both players kept on winning on their respective serves but in the eighth game Goerges broke her adversary for the first time and was able to get the sagacious edge that she required. She only needed one more game at this crucial stage in the set to win the first set and as she served she was able to smash an ace for the game point, winning a flawless set against the elder German.
Winning the first set boosted her confidence to a new level and with the crowd behind her back; she easily set the tone for a second set victory. Unfortunately for Barrois, this was it and she eventually was sent back to the lockers to pack up and leave.
Amidst the second set Goerges was able to break her opponent in the opening game and opened the score card to 1-0, she then went on to winning on her serve in the following game and finally Barrois got the hang of it and she too started winning on her serves. Both the players were a blow for a blow but in the fifth game Goerges broke her oppoent and held her serve to lead the set 5-2. The last service game belonged to Barrois but it was snatched away from Goerges to see a speedy victory in just 32 minutes of play.
The 22 year-old German was no competition for her and in a blink of an eye was able to secure a berth in the second round of the US Open 2011.
