Julia Goerges plonks Elena Baltacha to reach round three – BNP Paribas Open 2012
German tennis icon, Julia Goerges, sizzled at the hard courts of California on Friday and took her game to the next level; ousted the 28-years-old Briton, Elena Baltacha, in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in straight
sets 6-3, 6-2. She took just 68 minutes to register a heroic triumph.
The head-to-head scores of 3-1 now rest in favour of the German. She lost to the Briton in their second meeting at the hard courts of Texas Tennis Open in 20011. Apart from that, she has defeated her at Ismaning 2008, BGL Luxembourg
Open and now at BNP Paribas Open.
It was a world class performance from the finalist of the Dubai Duty Free Championships. She commenced the proceedings with a successful serve hold and continued to dominate the match. She was never tested on her serves but gave
a tough time to her rival during return games.
She wasn’t able to convert the break opportunities at the start but finally managed to sneak one out in the eighth game of the match to take the scores to 5-3 in her favour. It was a critical breakthrough as the Briton was left
with no chance but to break serve back in order to keep the set alive. Baltacha failed to earn a breakthrough and lost the set to the German.
Goerges kept the momentum in her favour in the second half of the match as well. She broke serve in the third game and took a lead of 2-1. She repeated the similar performance in the fifth game and gobbled a resounding lead of
4-1.
It was getting ominous for the Briton who was not able to find any opening in the match. It seemed like she was bullied across the court and the will of the German. Goerges stayed composed and didn’t fault on her serves to keep
her lead intact.
The lead proved pivotal as the German clasped the second set triumph as well and marched into the third round of the tournament with an unassailable victory under her belt. She will lock horns with the Spanish player, Anabel Medina
Garrigues, in the next round.
