Julia Goerges plonks Petra Cetkovska to advance into the quarters – Open GDF Suez 2012
Sixth seed German, Julia Goerges, cruised into the quarter-finals of the Open GDF Suez on Thursday, defeating the 31st ranked Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The contest
was played on hard courts in Paris and lasted for almost 65 minutes before the German powered down the birthday girl to register another resounding victory in the tournament.
Goerges had lost the maiden encounter between the two players. Both contestants played in the quarter-finals of the Joue-Les-Tours 2007. The German lost it by a hair, missing out on a final set tie-breaker round but she wasted
little time on Wednesday in taking her revenge and confirmed a place in the last eight.
The sixth seed was under the cosh in the opening game but did well to hold on. She turned the tables on her opponent in the next game, earning a breakthrough and galloping ahead with a 2-0 lead. Ninth successive point on
trot enhanced her lead to 3-0. She looked absolutely devastating at that stage, playing with full command.
Birthday girl had her first hold of serve in the fourth game but she was broken once again in the sixth game that diminished any chances of her comeback. Goerges bagged the first set with a successful serve hold and registered
an emphatic 6-1 score line that spoiled the special day for the Czech.
The second set witnessed both players holding on to their serves in the first three games before Cetkovska broke her opponent’s serve, against the run of play, to register a lead. Unfortunately, her lead was short-lived as
the German broke serve back in the next game to bring down the trail and levelled the scores with a successful hold.
It looked pretty ominous for the Czech. Her on-court performance was way below-par. The German showed her class once again and broke serve, courtesy to some eye-startling winners down the line. She looked to be in great touch
and was clearly a hot favourite to win the contest at that stage.
The Czech tried hard to fight back but her dismal form and poor shot selection led to her downfall. She covered a lot of ground in the hunt for a breakthrough but all the running went in vain when Goerges struck an absolute
majestic winner down the line to win the contest.
Goerges advanced to the quarter-finals where she locks horns with the winner of the match between Klara Zakopalova and Tsvetana Pironkova. She looks in sublime form and probably the second hot favourite contenders for the
title after the top seed Maria Sharapova.
