Julia Goerges razes Anabel Medina Garrigues and sails into the fourth round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number 15, Julia Goerges, ended the Indian Wells tour of the 26th ranked Spaniard, Anabel Medina Garrigues, on Sunday. It was the third round clash of the BNP Paribas Open that ended in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 for
the German.
The contest lasted for an hour and 39 minutes before the beauty queen of Germany clasped her third head-to-head triumph in her fifth face-off against the Spaniard. The rivalry started in Banka Koper Slovenia Open 2008, when the
29-years-old Spaniard ousted the German in a taxing three-setter.
Last match between the two contenders was played in the opening round of Wimbledon last year and the German diva trashed the Spanish veteran in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. On her second triumph in Indian Wells, Goerges stated, “It
doesn't matter who you are playing, the same motivation has to be there every time you go on court.”
She further added, “Of course, when you play No.1 in the world, you have nothing to lose. Vika's a tough player and recently won her first Grand Slam, and hasn't lost a match so far this year. I'll just try to focus on my game
and playing my game, and we'll see how far it brings me.”
Garrigues dropped the first breakpoint in the fourth game that opened up the set for the German who eased past to a lead of 4-2. An exchange of breakpoints at the ending stages of the opening set kept her lead intact. She smashed
an ace in the final game to round off the first set proceedings in her favour.
An early breakthrough for the Spaniard in the second half of the match didn’t help her cause. She wasn’t able to hold on to the lead of two games as the German diva broke serve in the fifth game to diminish the trail to 2-3. She
registered a successful serve hold to tie the scores at 3-3 and to the distress of her rival; broke serve again in the seventh game to reinforce her authority into the match.
Garrigues tried her best to win a break back but wasn’t able to dig deep on her rival’s serve and frustrate her with something outstanding. Goerges kept her cool and held her serves to win the set as well as the match.
Goerges has a chance to become the first player to break the unbeaten run of the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the fourth round of the tournament.
