Julia Goerges receives a shocker from Sara Errani in the quarter-finals – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
A major upset was witnessed at the red clay court of Barcelona on Friday when the seventh seed Italian defeated the second seed German, Julia Goerges, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to clear the quarter-final stage of the Barcelona
Ladies Open. It was just a matter of an hour and 16 minutes before the German bowed down to the consistent Italian.
It was never a contest at all. The German was missing every shot she tried to take control in the game. She was over hitting the returns on most of the occasions and relied on power play instead of staying in the points and waiting
for a mistake from her opponent.
The second encounter between the two players proved to be an end to a promising campaign of Goerges who was looking to bag the first title of the year. Earlier, she had ousted the Italian on grass courts in AEGON Classic, way back
in 2009.
World number 16, Goerges, started the match with a serve hold. Errani followed her with an easy serve hold and coupled that with back-to-back four points to oust the German in the third game. It was still the early stages of the
match and the second seed contestant was expected to make a comeback but she was powered down to a trail of 0-4 courtesy to another breakpoint.
The German bounced back to diminish the trail to 2-4 with a breakthrough but couldn’t take benefit of the breakthrough and donated another game to her opponent that almost closed all doors for her in the opening set. The Italian
starlet lost one rally in the final serve game of the opening set to win it comfortably and exert pressure on the match favourite German star.
It was necessary for the German to break serve early in the second set so that she could dominate the rest of it but the unforced errors kept piling up and Goerges sneaked a couple of serve holds after saving three breakpoints.
The seventh seed Italian faced no resistance at all during the serve games.
It was just a matter of time before Errani stabbed her rival with a lead and that moment arrived in the seventh game when she stunned everyone with two back-to-back blistering winners down the line. Goerges lost another breakpoint
and gifted away the win to the Italian contestant.
Errani will go head-to-head with the Spanish tennis ace, Carla Suarez Navarro, in the semi-final.
