Julia Goerges returns back to winning days – Tennis News
World number 24, Julia Goerges, looks to make a comeback in the Top-20 players of the world after falling out of that category courtesy to some poor performances in the recent tournaments. She won the opening round match in the
Sony Ericsson Swedish Open at Bastad in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The victim was none other than the Czech starlet, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who defeated the German four days before in the XXV Italiacom Open in Palermo.
After winning the match, Goerges expressed her delight in the following fashion, "We've played quite a few times now and Barbora is always very tough. She makes you play a lot of balls and I was really happy with my performance
and to come through with the win. I've been working really hard recently because it's an important time of year and hopefully I can have a good week here and take it into the rest of the season."
The major setback for the 23-year-old German came in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. She was the defending champion there and started as one of the favourites to win the title again but she fall victim to an
early second round exit at the hands of the fifth seed Aussie star, Samantha Stosur. She dropped a lot of points in that tournament that assisted her degradation in the overall rankings in the world.
Goerges had a fantastic start to the season that helped her enhance the ranking to the 15th spot in the world. She equalled her career-high ranking in April but since then it has been a sad tale to tell about the hard
hitting German.
First round exit at Stuttgart followed up with another opening round dropout in the Mutua Madrid Open. She managed to reach the third round of the Italian Open in Rome and the French Open but it was not her expected destination.
The misery continued in Bad Gastein as well where she was knocked out in the opening round by a qualifier.
Wimbledon proved a tough contest for Goerges who was ousted by the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, in the third round. However, the German has managed to revive some form back and her quarter-final exit at Palermo has marked
that remarkable turnaround.
She is expected to win the tournament at Bastad because the top seed contestant, Sara Errani, has already withdrawn from the tournament due to a shoulder injury and she is the top ranked player left in the event. Let’s hope the
beauty queen from Germany revives her glorious days and grows her ranking amongst the Top-20 players again.
