Julia Goerges disposes of Greta Arn in the first round to avenge her defeat – ASB Classic 2012
German world number 21, Julia Goerges, had her revenge of last year’s Auckland loss at the hands of Hungarian, Greta Arn, defeating her in two hours 20 minutes with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, on Tuesday. The German was fourth
seeded last year and was flabbergasted at the hands of the Hungarian in straight sets but this time she made no mistake in having her revenge and placing the second round berth in the ASB Classic tournament.
Goerges enhanced her head-to-head tally to 2-1 against Arn. It seemed like she was in no mood to forgive Arn this time and spared no opportunity to slaughter the Hungarian. The veteran tried to hang on and clinched the second
set but her competitor was not going to let her take the final set at any cost.
The contest kicked-off slowly as both players took their time to get settled in the game; first few games were pretty dull but then fifth seeded German picked up the momentum and broke her opponent’s serve in the sixth game
to take a two-game lead at a 4-2. She held her serve to further enhance her lead at 5-2 but Arn was up for the task and fought back with a break in the ninth game that helped her level the score in the next game at 5-5.
Next two games were held by respective serve players but the last game saw some fast and thrilling play from the German that completely owned Arn in every segment of the contest. Sparing nothing at all for Arn to take advantage,
Goerges took lead of one set and exerted immense pressure on her rival.
Arn bounced back and came with a different plan in the next game to counter the onslaught of the German. She was on top of her game; broke in the fifth game to take lead of 3-2 and further doubled it in the next game. Goerges
looked to have run out of ideas and her shot placement was dismal in the second set. She gifted points on several occasions by committing unforced errors. Arn pocketed the second set to enforce a third decisive one.
Cautious start to the last set was soon turned over when the two players exchanged breaks in the third and fourth game. Score was tied at 3-3 when the vital breakpoint was earned by the German that helped her to have her
revenge over the American. Arn couldn’t break back to level the score and lost the battle.
Julia Goerges now faces her compatriot, Angelique Kerber, in the second round of the tournament.
