Julia Goerges rise and shine at the Generali Ladies Linz – Tennis Special
Seeded fifth in this event, Julia Goerges from Germany displayed spectacular skills throughout the week and eventually secured a final berth at the Generali Ladies Linz 2012, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International level tournament held in Linz,
Austria.
The gorgeous German recreated her old magic at the Intersport Arena and cruised into the final showdown with losing only a single set. She entered this indoor hard court stadium standing at number 19 at the WTA Premier Rankings and stunned the former world
number five, Daniela Hantuchova, in straight sets in her opening match. Goerges was broken once but cashed two out of six break chances to clobber a 6-4, 7-6(5) success in 101 minutes.
Goerges carried her rhythm in the following round against Switzerland’s Romina Oprandi. She superbly warded off all four breakpoints she faced to keep her entire serves. The German availed half of the six break opportunities and clinched the match with a
6-3, 6-3 score line in one hour and 13 minutes.
The 23-year-old maintained consistency in her quarter-final clash against Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson. She crippled the Swede with a breadstick in 78 minutes to breeze into the final four. Goerges amazingly brushed off five out of six breakpoints she encountered
and marked four out of 11 break chances to formulate a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
In the semi-finals, Goerges was handed a breadstick in the opening set against the Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens, who stunned second seeded Ana Ivanovic with a bagel to reach this spot. However, the German remained focused and after cashing four break
chances, she nudged up a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory in 100 minutes.
"First of all, I want to enjoy the final - it has been a long season and it's nice to see my game is still there and improving," Goerges reflected about securing a final berth. "Also it's nice to be in another final here - I won my first WTA title in Austria
- so hopefully I do well.”
Bidding for her maiden career title this season, Goerges high-spiritedly stepped into the Austrian hard courts for her final battle against top seed Victoria Azarenka. In the opening set, the German failed to ward off both breakpoints she faced. She was
also unsuccessful in finding any break opportunity and eventually suffered a 3-6 loss.
The high flying German rebounded in the following set and availed two out of three break chances. However, she warded off only four out of seven breakpoints she encountered, consequently enduring a 4-6 shock.
Goerges was quoted in a courtside interview after bowing out to the Belarusian number one:
"Well, it was a tough day, but I saw I had the chance to stay with the No.1 player in the world, and even change the match from 5-0 down. But I got to two finals here, which I've never achieved in one week before, and even though I didn't win, I'm happy
with my tournament."
The German rising star showed her awe-inspiring skills at the doubles event in this competition as well. She paired up with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and cruised into the title-round through exceptional co-ordination. They were bowed out to top seeds, Anna-Lena
Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke, but enjoyed a great week.
