Julia Goerges scuttles past Anastasija Sevastova to reach round two – ASB Classic 2013
Julia Goerges, the second seed German, showed a bit of class in the opening game of her new season at the hard courts of Auckland, New Zealand on Tuesday. She crushed the 22-year-old Latvian, Anastasija Sevastova, in straight sets
6-3, 6-4 to book a spot in the second round of the ASB Classic tournament.
The 184th ranked Sevastova wasn’t bad with her technique at all but she was unable to handle the fierce pace and the barrage of winners hit back at her by the 18th ranked German. It was her third head-to-head
battle against the 24-year-old Goerges. It also ended in a defeat just like the previous two that were contested in the year 2011.
Goerges was a bit sloppy and wayward in the first game of the match but she managed to secure a serve hold after a tough battle. She gained some momentum and clasped an early breakthrough in the second game that was backed up by
a serve hold to love. Scores moved on to 3-0 in her favour and the early match nerves were already over.
The Latvia professional tried her best to make a comeback but just managed to win four points in her following three games that clearly wrote-off her chances of any sort of securing the first set. Goerges looked a better player;
dominated the show and smashed a couple of aces in the first phase.
Sevastova had to register a strong start to the second set to put her opponent under pressure. However, she was unable to hold her serve in the opening game despite saving a couple of breakpoints. She had an opportunity to level
the terms with Goerges in the following game and successfully converted it in her favour.
However, the Latvian couldn’t hold her serve in the third game of the set that forced a trail again. Goerges kept the pressure until the end despite a couple of close calls for her opponent and secured a second round berth at Auckland.
Next up for the 24-year-old German is Johanna Larsson of Switzerland who defeated Misaki Doi of Japan in the opening round.
