Julia Goerges sends Jelena Jankovic packing in opening round – Rogers Cup 2011
German, Julia Goerges and the Serbian, Jelena Jankovic took to the hard courts of Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada as they kicked off the first round of the 2011 Rogers Cup. After battling it out one hour and eleven minutes, Goerges
triumphed over Jankovic with a straight set victory of 6-1, 6-3.
Although, the two had met twice during their professional career, the last time they met was earlier this year at the BNP Paribas Open on the hard courts of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden where Jankovic had bagged yet
another victory and hence, had won twice in their last two meetings, hence, leading in the head to head 2-0. This was the third time the two met and surprisingly Goerges finally came out victorious.
Seeded 15, the Serb performed appallingly as she committed many unforced errors during her serve. She started off by committing one break point and striking an ace, however later her serve plummeted and she was only able to attain
1 out of 6 points in her second serve, which later added to only a 44% win in her total service points.
In addition, the world number 14, Jankovic’s unsatisfactory performance didn’t stop at her serve instead she was unable to hit sharp angle replies as she did in Wimbledon and barely managed a 38% win in her total return points,
against the world number 20, who bagged a good 56% of her total return points.
Unable to capitalise on her adversary’s opponent Jankovic lost the set with 10 points fewer than her opponent’s.
The Serbian having lost the first set displayed a rusty serving and returning ability, as it was her first match after Wimbledon. Once Goerges beat her old fangled rival in the first set, there was no stopping her now, the crowd
cheered her on and she was on fire!
Amidst the second set, neither of the players struck a double fault and neither had hit an ace. However, Goerges was performing gorgeously in her serve as she was able to amass 17 of 22 points, which amounted to a 77% win in her
total service points, while, the Serb only congregated 56% of her total service points.
Goerges’ gorgeous display of rebounding shots aimed at her opponent entertained the masses along with, facilitating her own ability; she was able to clench 44% of her total return points and besides this she was capable enough
to save all her break points and broke her opponent twice.
After her shocking loss Jankovic said, "I wasn't really wasn't feeling my game out there, I made some bad errors, a lot of errors actually. I tried the best I could, but I just need some more time and some more matches, and hopefully
I'll do better."
Following her win Goerges said, "I had like two or three weeks that haven't been that good for me, but I improved every week I was playing. When you play a player like Jelena, you have to play your best. I went for my shots tonight
and it went pretty well."
The 22-year-old German, for the first time in a total three matches against each other was able to win a match. It was as if the Higher Power had granted her wish and she sailed through to the next round.
