Julia Goerges settles scores with Silvia Soler-Espinosa in round one - Luxembourg Open 2012
Julia Goerges took revenge from Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the opening round of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open on Tuesday. She lost to the same player in the opening round of the Hansol Korea Open in Seoul last month but this
time the in-form German wasted little time in thrashing a year elder Spanish competitor.
Espinosa surrendered in just 58 minutes to the onslaught of Goerges who registered the scores of 6-2, 6-1 to close down the opening set proceedings. It was a remarkable performance and the momentum that was built in the Generali
Ladies Linz was carried to Luxembourg by the 19th ranked German. On the other hand, the 84th ranked Spaniard was absolutely dismal with her returns and couldn’t devise a plan to take down the net shots that were the major factor in Goerges’s
win.
Goerges stated at the end of the contest, "I'm always happy to come back and finish the season here in Luxembourg. I just have good memories here - in the last two years I've reached a final and a semi final - and it kind of feels
like I'm back at home in Germany, with all of the television channels and people here.”
She further added, "Usually at the end of the season we're pretty tired, but I always feel I have something left in the tank here. I'll try to go as far as possible this week.”
Goerges was under the cosh in the opening game but that was the only time she was tested in the first set of the match. She survived the early nervy situation and held her serve. From that stage, she started to hammer her opponent
down with the bog booming forehand returns that came at lightning quick pace to Espinosa who could just barely kept the ball back in the bounds of court. The 23-year-old German won the first breakthrough in the fourth game and carried the momentum to win another
one in the eighth game that proved to be the final action from the first phase.
Nothing changed for the 24-year-old Spaniard in the second set as well. She suffered heavily from the winners down the line that were smashed by the second seed German. Goerges won a breakpoint in the second game and again in the
sixth to round off the second phase in quick succession.
Julia Goerges faces Monica Niculescu in the battle for a spot in the quarter-final.
