Julia Goerges shines bright against Caroline Wozniacki to reach final – Dubai Championships 2012
Clash of the titans on Friday witnessed the German diva, Julia Goerges, sneaking into the title match of Dubai Duty Free Championships; ousting the Dane World Number four, Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 7-6(3), 7-5 in a battle lasting two hours and
12 minutes.
Gorgeous Goerges is on fire. She definitely loves her time on the court. Previously, both players had played four matches against one another and head-to-head scores were tied 2-2. However, the German had defeated the Dane in the previous two encounters.
World Number 19, Goerges, defeated the then-top seed Dane in the final of Stuttgart and the third round of Madrid Open last year. The psychological advantage was definitely with the German who looked a better player throughout the contest.
The German tennis ace started the match with a successful serve hold and dominated the proceedings; broke her opponent’s serve in the fourth game to take a lead of 3-1. However, her serve was broken in the following game that allowed the Dane to bring the
scores together 3-3.
Another swap of breakpoints witnessed the scores ticking over 5-5. Both players held their nerves in the crunch situation and registered successful serve holds that pushed the scores 6-6. A tie-breaker round witnessed an enthralling battle between the two
players but the initial mini-break for the German helped her to take a lead and inch a step closer to a major upset.
The second set started in blistering fashion with both players playing aggressively; a double swap of breakpoints at the beginning of the set witnessed the scores ticking over 2-2. Wozniacki held her serve in the following game and took the lead with another
breakthrough but her serve was broken in the following game that levelled the scores 4-4.
Scores further progressed 5-5. A classic dramatic turnaround in the match came in the eleventh game when the German played three eye-startling winners down the line to win another break-point at the most critical stage of the set. She held her serve to confirm
a spot in the final of the tournament.
In a post-match interview the beauty queen of Germany said, “She killed me in Australia. I wasn't even ready for that match. I didn't really play the shots and was just missing everything. Tomorrow is a new day, a new match and starts from zero again. It's
going to be a challenge. When you're in a final you want to go out there and leave everything on the court. That's what I'm going to do tomorrow."
She was talking about her fellow finalist from Poland, Agnieszka Radwanska. Both these players will lock horns on Saturday for the title.
