Julia Goerges shocks Marion Bartoli in round two - Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2012
World number 29, Julia Goerges, finally got off the mark against the French number one, Marion Bartoli, in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Wednesday. She clinched the win in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 and sent
the French packing in an hour and 17 minutes.
It was the biggest upset of the day and Goerges needed such a thumping triumph to regain momentum and climb the ranking stairs. She was number 15 in the world a month ago and now rocks bottom to the 29th rank due to
her dismal form in the clay court season.
Goerges started the match with a serve hold and broke serve to take the lead of 2-0. However, the French fought back into the contest with a breakthrough in the fourth game and levelled the scores at 2-2. The German smashed an
ace and coupled it up with three majestic winners to hold the serve at love.
French tennis ace faltered badly in the sixth game and gifted a breakpoint to her rival that reinstated the lead of two games for the German. With no more drama and breakpoints in the remaining games of the set, Goerges took the
lead and hinted a return of her sublime form.
Bartoli started the second set battle and both players switched three breakpoints at the beginning that fell in favour of the German in the ratio of 2:1. German beauty queen fought back 0:30 to hold the serve in the fourth game
and took a resounding lead of 3-1.
The French failed to hold serve in the fifth game as well and donated a monumental lead of 4-1 to her competitor who converted into to 5-1 with a serve hold. World number seven, Bartoli saved a couple of breakpoints in the final
game but couldn’t restrict the German to convert the third breakpoint; therefore lost the match.
Julia Goerges steps into the third round of the tournament where she locks horns with the number one German player, Angelique Kerber. Two best friends will be standing in the opposite courts battling it out for a place in the fourth
round. It will be an eye-startling battle to witness for the tennis fanatics.
