Julia Goerges splits apart Shahar Peer to begin the campaign – Wimbledon Championships 2012
World number 24, Julia Goerges, eased past the 50th ranked Israeli professional, Shahar Peer, in the opening round clash of Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday. The match was scheduled to be played on Tuesday and it
started on time; featured 6-2, 2-1 score line in favour of the German starlet but was suspended due to rain and resumed the following day. Goerges finished off the match quickly by winning four out of five games on Wednesday and more importantly gathered some
momentum.
It was the third straight head-to-head triumph for the 22nd seed German who has never lost to the Israeli star in her professional career. The first time they squared off against one another was the third round of the
Family Circle Cup, last year. Goerges picked up an easy straight sets triumph in that clash. Last battle was contested in the opening round brawl in Open GDF Suez at Paris. The German bagged the match with no pressure and a similar thrashing was witnessed
in Wimbledon Championships opener.
The 23-year-old German has created a strong psychological hold against the former world number 11. Peer had three opportunities to break serve in the opening set but she failed to translate any of them in her favour.
On the other hand, the German was able to pound on her rival and convert two out of allotted two chances to break serve. It was a comprehensive performance from the stunning German who rounded off the first phase of the match in
just 24 minutes.
Goerges dominated the entire second set; marshalling her rival at her will and forcing Peer to drop breakpoints on two different occurrences that completely dismantled the confidence of the 25-year-old Israeli.
Peer tried to hold serve in the opening game on Wednesday but failed to do so; going down 3-1 in the second set. A thumping serve hold to 40:15 further enhanced the lead to 4-1 in favour of the German. There was no coming back
from that stage, it was a tough task for the Israel star who was already struggling to display any sort of control on her serves.
Both players held serve in the following two games before the German broke serve for the second time in the set; wasting eight other chances. However, it didn’t matter in the end as the match was won comprehensively by the German.
Julia Goerges contests her second round clash against Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarusia.
