Julia Goerges stoops to Kristyna Pliskova in the first clash – US Open 2012
World number 21, Julia Goerges, bowed out to the 125th ranked Czech qualifier, Kristyna Pliskova, in the opening round of the US Open in New York. She lost the opening set tie-breaker 6(4)-7 and completely lost her way
in the second set; losing 1-6.
The 23-year-old German commenced the match with a serve hold and forced her opponent to save a couple of breakpoints before she could matchup to her score. Both players capitalized on their serves in the following four games of
the match and posted the scores of 3-3.
Surprisingly, it was the Czech booming starlet who broke her rival’s serve to take a lead in the seventh game. Goerges missed a couple of winners by just a meagre margin that led to her downfall. However, it was expected that she
will bounce back into the contest.
Goerges didn’t let her fans down and kept the set alive by winning a breakpoint in the 10th game of the match. It was a pleasant comeback for someone who is frustrated by the lack of form in the recent past. Both players
held their serves in the following two games.
Pliskova was forced to save a breakpoint in the 12th game of the match but the good luck of the Czech kept her in the match. Moreover, the mini-break for the 20-year-old beauty queen mounted more pressure on the 18th
seed German. A stylish winner from Pliskova ended the first set in her favour.
The second set was extremely disappointing for all German fans who didn’t want to see the back of the gorgeous diva at the first stage of the contest. However, they were left dejected with the lack of willpower from Goerges to
fight back.
Pliskova won two breakpoints on the trot to take a resounding lead of 5-1 in the second set and held her serve to love in the final game that shattered the dreams of the German queen in the first round. Goerges wasn’t the only
German to stoop to a lower ranked player, Sabine Lisicki also lost to Sorana Cirstea.
Kristyna Pliskova squares off against Mandy Minella in round two.
