Julia Goerges struggles past Anastasija Sevastova into second round – Generali Ladies Linz 2011
German tennis pro Julia Goerges defeated Anastasija Sevastova in a thrilling three setter 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7) on Tuesday to book her place in the second round of 2011 Generali Ladies Linz here in Austria. Goerges made a strong start
to the match and although she lost the track a bit in second set, she came back strongly in final set to earn a memorable victory.
Goerges has been in terrific form since the start of this season. Throughout the year 2011, she has given impressive results including a victory over world number one Caroline Wozniacki. Winning the second title of her career
on tour, she climbed to world number 21 in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings.
Seeded sixth at the WTA tournament, Goerges will be looking to make it all the way to the final stages with another strong and impressive run here on the hard courts of Linz. However, she will have to control her unforced errors
considerably to bring consistency in the results.
Sevastova, in contrast, will be disappointed with the way she let opportunities slip out of her hands. After losing the first set, she bounced back marvellously in second set to event he set score 1-1. However, in third set tie-breaker,
she failed to handle the heat and she paid the ultimate price.
Ranked 108th in the world, Sevastova will take a lot of confidence from her performance against a quality player like Goerges and she is expected to come back really strongly on her next appearance on WTA tour.
Goerges looked in complete control as the match started. Blasting her big forehand and backhand winners all over the court, she made her opponent’s game play look completely ineffective in the opening set. Breaking her opponent’s
serve twice, the German raced to a handsome 5-2 lead. Sevastova also raised the level of her game play and she managed to reduce the game score deficit to 5-4. However, Goerges concentrated on her own game play as she clinched the opening set 6-4.
Sevastova had gained some sort of momentum at the end of first set. Timing the ball exceptionally well, she outplayed the challenger in second set. Leading the game score 5-3, she broke the German to force the match into the final
set.
Both women displayed some high quality tennis in third and final set. Looking in supreme touch, Goerges clinched the tie-breaker 9-7 to close out the match that lasted for more than two hours and thirteen minutes.
