Julia Goerges stuns Caroline Wozniacki to win the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
Sheer surprise hit the tennis fans around the globe as the world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark crashed out in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix at Stuttgart, Germany, against the 32nd ranked Julia
Goerges. 22-year-old German outplayed the top seed Wozniacki in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-3, to bag the $721,000 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) title.
The unseeded Goerges beat all odds to overcome the hot favourite Wozniacki, who was playing her fifth WTA final of the year. The Dane had two victories over Goerges last year but failed to outplay the German this time round. She
used her mighty ground strokes to perfection, stringed with precise and powerful serve to outclass the top ranked Dane to clinch the second WTA title of her career.
“I had goosebumps at match point. It was an unbelievable feeling playing the final with so many people watching,” expressed Goerges after her emphatic victory, “Everything was going so well but you can never be sure against Caroline.
She has turned lots of matches around when nobody expected her to. She is only beaten when the last point is over. Now I'm looking forward to my niece’s baptism on Monday and being able to sleep in my own bed again after three months travelling the tour!”
Fierce serve game was witnessed from the two competitors in the opening set, with none of them registering a break point. The only break opportunity in the first set was crafted by the German but Wozniacki denied her to keep the
score board ticking on even terms. Goerges had far more aggressive approach to the game, in contrast to the Dane’s conservative one. The German clinched 38 winners in the match and coughed 29 unforced errors with Wozniacki lagging behind with 9 winners and
10 errors.
A routine game in the first set took the scores to 6-6, imposing a decisive tie breaker round. Goerges proved the better competitor in the intense pressure situation and bagged the opening set at 7-6(3). The German carried on her
winning momentum in the following set as well and stung the first serve break of the match in the second game. She hung on to it for the rest of the contest and concluded her championship victory at 6-3. Deafening roars erupted from the local crowd at Stuttgart
as Wozniacki miss hit a forehand stroke on Goerges’ second match point and the German fell onto the ground in sheer joy.
Goerges also received a brand new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet and this title victory will raise her to her career best ratings of 27 this week.
