Julia Goerges takes a sigh of relief after clearing round one at the French Open – Tennis Special
Finally, a victory for the German tennis ace, Julia Goerges; she commenced her Roland Garros French Open campaign against the 61st ranked Czech, Lucie Hradecka and expensed her in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-4.
So there is something to enjoy for the German lady who has been in dismal run of form, especially on the clay courts, having started the year in terrific fashion. She rushed up to her career-high ranking of world number 15 in April
but couldn’t answer all the calls of the clay court; drowned to world number 29 and now stands at the 27th spot in the women tennis association rankings.
The 23-year-old German had played three encounters with the Czech before this one and led the head-to-head scores by 2-1. However, the last battle between the two players was won by the 27-year-old Czech but that was played way
back in July 2009 during the Istanbul Cup. So, it was technically a sweet revenge for the 25th seed German but more importantly she was able to win a match on clay.
Hard hitting Goerges started the match in emphatic fashion; winning a breakthrough in the second game and taking a resounding lead of 3-0. However, the same happened that has been witnessed through the clay court season. She failed
to capitalize on that lead and lost the following three games that tied the scores at 3-3.
Another scare for the German beauty queen was knocking at the door but she did well to regroup and stayed focused; capitalized on her serves and enforced a tie-breaker round into play. It was not an easy set for the German who
had opportunities to take a lead but squandered them all; frustration was clearly there but she absorbed the tension and swallowed all the anger. The tie-breaker round proved to be beneficial for her as she took an early mini-break and won it with ease.
However, the job was still half done. She needed to win the second set as well. Her coach was pumping her morale every time she failed to win a rally and that kept her in the match. First four games of the second set went by without
a lot of drama and Hradecka lost the breakpoint in the following game.
Goerges consolidated the lead with a serve hold but again squandered it in the eighth game. However, she was gifted a breakthrough back in the following game courtesy three unforced errors in a row from the Czech.
The German was just a serve hold away and she didn’t spoil the chance; donated just one point in the last game before raising her hands to the crowd and smiling to the fans. The smile was more like a relief than glory for the German
who has failed on multiple occurrences this year having started pretty well.
Next up for the gorgeous Goerges is the British booming star, Heather Watson, who registered yet another upset by defeating the superior ranked Russian, Elena Vesnina, in the opening round. So, the German is up against another
tough rival in the next round.
