Julia Goerges topples Varvara Lepchenko in round two – London Olympics 2012
World number 24, Julia Goerges, continues to take revenge of her earlier losses in the season at London Olympics. This time she outplayed the 26-year-old American, Varvara Lepchenko, in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to reach the pre-quarters
stage of the gold medal hunt at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon.
Goerges first outclassed the Pole flag-bearer, Agnieszka Radwanska, in an epic three-setter to register the biggest upset of the tournament on Day 2. Radwanska was the second seed in the tournament and a very strong contender for
the gold medal.
On Tuesday, the German beauty queen bounced over the 40th ranked American who defeated her in the second round of the Qatar Ladies Open, earlier this year in February. Both victories were the first one for the 23-year-old
German in the head-to-head series against each player respectively.
So, it looks like to be a breakthrough tournament for the hard-hitting German who was subdued in the clay court season. Goerges was the third German to register victory on Tuesday following her two superior ranked compatriots,
Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki.
Both players capitalized on their serves for the first seven games of the match before the German broke serve to 30:40 and took a lead at the most critical stage of the set. She just had to hold her serve in the following game
to bag the opening set and she did that with style; smashing a couple of aces and coupling them with two marvellous winners.
Lepchenko tried to turn the tables in the second set and was almost on the verge of pulling up a marvellous win but squandered the opportunity. Scores were 4-3 in favour of the American who marched on to break her opponent’s serve.
She just had to hold serve to win the set but the German somehow fought back into the contest and won the breakpoint back to diminish the trail.
Goerges hit two more aces in the 10th game of the second set to register another serve hold to love. Scores were tied at 5-5 at that time. The pressure was back on the 40th ranked American who faltered miserably
in the following game; gifting a breakthrough to her rival.
Goerges stood firm and held her serve with ease; punched the air and expressed her delight at winning the contest that was running away from her at one stage.
The 14th seed Russian, Maria Kirilenko, will be the next opponent for the German.
