Julia Goerges triumphs over Eleni Daniilidou in 2nd round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Third seed German Julia Goerges triumphed over Greek Eleni Daniilidou in the second round match of the Hansol Korea Open 2011. After battling it out for one hour and thirty eight minutes on the hard courts of Olympic Tennis Courts in Seoul, South Korea, the number three seeded Gorges won in straight sets of 6-4, 7-5 on the 22nd of September 2011.
Subsequently after winning the pitch, Goerges opted to serve first for the initial round of the set but she got off to a poor start because she was broken in the first game. Capitalizing on an early break Daniilidou went on to holding her serve in the second game and again broke her opponent for the second time in the set during the third game. By holding her own in the fourth she was now leading with a 4-0.
Goerges was unable to find her rhythm during the first four games but eventually in the fifth got around and held her serve for the first time. Though it was a difficult feat, Goerges then broke her opponent twice in the following four games to reel off the square to a tie at 4-4.
When it mattered the most, Goerges held her serve under pressure and was now looking to break her adversary in the tenth game. A flabbergasted Daniilidou was nervous while serving and as she was trying to hit a crosscourt forehand, she double faulted and gave her adversary a confidence boosting win of the first set.
As the German again served for the second set, she avenged Daniilidou by breaking her in second game and went on to holding her serve to not only easily place herself on the score board but also to a mini lead of 3-0.
During the following three games Daniilidou made a comeback and decided not to let her opponent get the satisfaction of an easy by breaking the German in the fifth game and by winning on her serve she equalized the score at 3-3.
In the next four games the players again tied their scores at 5-5 but as Goerges hit a backhand winner down the line, she bagged a service game and was now looking for a fortunate break. Luckily Daniilidou double faulted and gave the match to her opponent.
Julia Goerges rightly proved that she was a number three seed and was able to secure a place in the quarterfinal of the event.
