Julia Smit and Nathan Adrian dominate finals on day two of Speedo Grand Challenge
Four-time Pan American Games champion, Julia Smit, has won two major events in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley and the 200m backstroke, at the end of day two of the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge, held at the William Woollett Aquatic Centre in Irvine, on May 28.
In the Women’s 400m Individual Medley final, Olympian, Julia Smit, clinched an emphatic victory over the Trojan swimmer, Katinka Hosszu, with a sterling time of 4 minutes and 38.83 seconds. Her team-mate, Maya Dirado, claimed the third spot with a time of 4 minutes and 45.28 seconds. Andie Taylor wound up fourth in a time of 4 minutes and 45.49 seconds.
Stanford’s swimmer Julia Smit secured her second gold medal in the Women’s 200m backstroke with a winning time of 2 minutes and 12.72 seconds. More importantly, Smit broke her previous record of 2 minutes and 13.43 seconds set in the respective meet in 2010.
Dirado claimed the silver medal with a time of 2 minutes and 15.09 seconds, while Kendyl Stewart of Coast captured bronze in a time of 2 minutes and 18.02 seconds in the following meet.
Smit was pleased with her performance in both the 400m IM and 200m backstroke finals. She is a well-known swimmer of USA, who does have the expertise in all forms of swimming, such as freestyle, backstroke, Individual Medley and other categories also.
One of the strongest hallmarks of the Stanford swimmer is her furious speed in the Individual Medley and backstroke styles. She won four gold medals in the Women’s 100m backstroke, 200m medley, 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley finals in the 2007 Pan American Games.
She claimed two titles in the Women’s 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle finals during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The athlete has the desire like other swimmers of the world, to win her first Olympic gold medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
In the Men’s 50m freestyle final, Nathan Adrian of Cal Aquatics snatched the gold medal with a time of 22.33 seconds and elevated to the Twelfth spot in the world rankings. Will Copeland of Cal earned the second spot in 22.57 seconds, while Graeme Moore settled third in 22.86 seconds.
David Dunford of Stanford was placed fourth in a time of 22.97 seconds, while Vlad Morozov of Trojan took home the Men’s 50m freestyle consolation final, with a sterling time of 22.92 seconds.
