Julia Wilkinson claims Women’s 100m backstroke gold: Day three - 2012 Canada Swimming Cup
Julia Wilkinson of Team Canada claimed gold medal of the Women’s 100m backstroke on third day of the 2012 Canada Swimming Cup in Montreal on Saturday, July 7.
The 24-year-old Wilkinson, who is all set to represent Canada at the forthcoming Olympic Games in London, served notice of her talent by gaining gold medal of the backstroke discipline at the national championship.
With her invincible efforts, she enjoyed a commendable lead over her challengers and tapped the finishing end for gold medal with the timing of 1 minute and 00.49 seconds.
The gold medallist remained 2.06 seconds ahead of Genevieve Cantin of Rouge et Or, who proved her mettle for silver medal of the discipline by submitting a time of 1 minute and 02.55 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Hilary Caldwell of Team Canada, who remained 0.39 seconds apart and occupied bronze medal of the discipline by reporting an effort of 1 minute and 02.94 seconds.
The bronze medallist was chased by Vanessa Taillefer of Rouge et Or and Alyson Ackman of Pointe-Claire Swim Club, who engaged each other in a neck-to-neck battle for fourth position.
The duo displayed their exhausting efforts but failed to surpass each other on the finishing end and reached the finishing wall with identical efforts of 1 minute and 05.45 seconds for fourth place.
Sixth position of the discipline was secured by Er Seltenreich-Hodgson, who stayed 0.05 seconds behind and clocked a timing of 1 minute and 05.50 seconds.
Seltenreich-Hodgson was chased by Marie-Pier Couillard of Riverains, who remained 0.40 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and secured seventh position of the discipline by producing a time of 1 minute and 05.90 seconds.
The 20-year-old Couillard was chased by Gabrielle Soucisse of Ppo, who stayed 0.26 seconds behind and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute and 06.16 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Wilkinson was delighted with her top finish in the 100m backstroke event and expressed that she will try her best to occupy gold medal of the same discipline at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
